WARNING...New
Credit Card Scam.
Note,
the callers do not ask for your card number; THEY already have it. This
information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA &
MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared
to protect yourself.
The scam works like this: Person calling says, "This is (name), and
I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge
Number is 12460 your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase
pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card
which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an
Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in
When you say "No", the caller continues with, "Then we
will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been
watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500
purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the
credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?"
You
say "yes". The caller continues - "I will be starting a
Fraud investigation.
If you have any questions, you should call the
1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for
Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then
gives you a
6 digit number. "Do you need me to read it again?"
Here's
the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, "I
need to verify you are in possession of Your card".
He'll
ask you to "turn your card over and look for some numbers".
There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next
3 are the security Numbers' that verify you are the possessor of the
card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases
to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3
numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he'll say,
"That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not
been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any
other questions?" After you say No, the caller then thanks you and
states, "Don't hesitate to call back if you do", and hangs up.
You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the
Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back
within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA
Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a
new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.
Long story made short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA
account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What
the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card.
Don't give it to them. Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master
card directly for verification of their conversation.
The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card
as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you
give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a
credit. However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges
for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost to late and/or
more difficult to actually file a fraud report.
What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a
"Jason Richardson of MasterCard" with a word-for-word repeat
of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed
a Police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking
several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we
know that this scam is happening.
Please pass this on to all your family and friends. By informing each
other, we protect each other.
Cell Phones!
ALL wireless phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls. YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS!
I received a telemarketing call on my cell phone. Not only did I have to pay airtime to receive the call, but they left a voicemail message and, I didn't recognize the number, so I returned the call (more airtime!). You must call (888) 392-1222 from your cell phone or the number you want to have blocked. Better yet, save your airtime and register all of your numbers at www.DoNotCall.gov. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for 5 years.

My name is Captain Abraham Sands of the Jacksonville, Florida, Police
Department. I have been asked by state and local authorities to write
this email in order to get the word out to car drivers of a very
dangerous prank that is occurring in numerous states. Some person or
persons have been affixing hypodermic needles to the underside of gas
pump handles! These needles appear to be infected with HIV positive
blood. In the Jacksonville area alone, there have been 17 cases of
people being stuck by these needles over the past five (5) months. We
have verified reports of at least 12 others in various states around th!
e country. It is believ ed that these may be copycat incidents due to
someone reading about the crimes or seeing them reported on television
At this point no one has been arrested and catching the perpetrator(s)
has become our top priority. Shockingly, of the 17 people who where
stuck, 8 have tested HIV positive and because of the nature of the
disease, the others could test positive in a couple years.
Evidently the consumers go to fill their car with gas, and when picking
up the pump handle get stuck with the infected needle.
IT IS IMPERATIVE TO CAREFULLY CHECK THE HANDLE of the gas pump each time
you use one. LOOK AT EVERY SURFACE YOUR HAND MAY TOUCH, INCLUDING UNDER
THE HANDLE!
If you do find a needle affixed to one, immediately contact your local
police department so they can collect the evidence.

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured
everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and that
she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got
her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she
appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest
of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that
his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm, Ingrid passed
away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to
identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today.
Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE
R*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
*NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out their tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately !! and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

This is something that happened to us on the way back from vacation last spring.
I didn't think much of it until now. The reason we were a little suspicious
is we had been riding in a jeep all day with 100degrees temps
and we stopped at a truck stop for something to
drink.
When I was leaving, a young girl followed me out and asked what
kind of cologne I was wearing. Well, after 7 hours in the car sweating,
I
don't think you could tell I was or was not wearing any cologne. We just
got in the jeep and said no thanks.
Then it was about 3 weeks ago, I was at a service station in
Brampton
getting
gas. It was about
women in a car. The man that was driving asked me 'What kind of perfume
do you wear?' I was a bit confused and I asked him 'Why?' He
said,
We are selling some name brand perfumes, at cheap prices.' I said I had
nomoney.
He then reached out of the car and handed me paper that was laminated;
it had perfume on it. I looked quickly at it and gave it
back. Isaid, I have no money. He said it is OK, we take
check, cash,or credit cards. Then the people in the car began
to laugh.
I just got in my car and said no thanks.
THIS
IS NOT PERFUME...IT IS ETHER!
When you sniff it, you'll pass out. They'll take your wallet, your
valuables and heaven knows what else. If it were not for this e-mail, I
probably would have sniffed the 'perfume' but thanks to the generosity
of an e-mailing friend, I was spared whatever might have happened to me.
