Luther Barnes &  Sunset Jubilaires

 ANNIVERSARY, Tarboro, NC

Send in your review, too!

Luther Barnes and the Sunset Spirituals Anniversary was held at the beautiful Keihin Auditorium (pronounced kay-heen). It holds 1,029 seats. With a seventy foot wide stage and flown acoustic panels, the facility is designed as a concert hall.  The place was filled to capacity this past Sunday as we all went out to help them celebrate this joyous occasion. When I arrived there was a choir already on stage. They sang really, really well. But I guess they were just in the wrong territory. The crowd barely looked at the stage while they sang. But as soon as George Dickens and the Disciples took the stage Tarboro let loose. “ I Never Gave Up, I Held On a Little Longer” thrilled the crowd and the rest of the program flowed  to the same beat.

The Burden Lifters were received very well. That Norris just sangs “I put it All in God’s Hands., and he did just that Sunday and the Holy Spirit took it from there. The crowd awaited their new release eagerly, “Listen to What the Word is Saying” When the band cranked it up, the audience rose to their feet to show their appreciation. And of course they signed their performance with “Thunder” and the band played on….(if you know what I mean, just ain’t NO party like a Holy Ghost party!)

Greg Kelly & Foundation took the stage after Willis and the Lifters. Honestly, the crowd stood in approval of his medley of songs he recorded with Slim & The Supreme Angels. Then he shared a lengthy testimony of his failing eyesight, God's miraculous healing of his Cancer and went into his drive song…”Thank You Lord” This brought the dancers in the aisle and we took it to church from there. However he closed with a ballad, I can’t remember the name, I guess you can tell after his testimony, the drive song was the highlight of Greg’s delivery.

Comedian Linwood came on and did a thorough job of keeping the audience laughing  with his Laying of Hands, Lee Williams impressions and church humor. Then he was off to the floor for his offering. Must have done good too cause he came back on stage and gave away a video.

Intermission was 20 minutes, they served the Southern favorites…Fried Chicken, Fish cooked by them cooking Red Budd folks. I think about 900 of the 1029 in attendance ran for the lobby. (after all, that’s where the grub was). Even the MC was onstage talking about how good the food was.

FC and Co. came up after Intermission and I do declare I believe FC’s voice gets stronger instead of weaker. That man can just sang. He told us he was ole timey and that’s how he was gonna sing…ole timey. He did too, he did 2 songs off the bat, then he called Debra out and she led two. He has a new young man singing in the back and they’re harmony is so-oo tight, he’s a welcome addition to the company. It frees Debra up to lead more, and ya’ll know that gal can sang! They did a wonderful version of the 23rd Psalm, ending with the staple from years ago…”Surely, Surely…He’s Able to Carry You Through. They closed out with their signature song “Rough Side of the Mountain”. I think every person in the building went up the side of the mountain with them and made it on in.

Luther & The Sunsets followed FC up the mountain with I’m Still Holding On,, Something Inside of Me Telling Me to Go Ahead. The precious anointing filled the house when he sang It’s Your Time and he just reminded everybody who’s Anniversary it really was. He sealed it with “Wherever I Go and left the stage, came back and received the crowd’s ovation with Everything I Do, I Keep on Leaning on the Lord and honestly, I've never seen the Sunsets band play like they played Sunday. The crowd went crazy and the band played on, I mean like 10 minutes or so after the group left the stage and we applauded every minute of it. I've seen them time and time again, but never seen them play like they did on this Anniversary Celebration. They claimed the Victory on Sunday night and wrecked that place!

Well you know who brought up the rear, That’s right Lee Williams, yall!

I don’t have to tell you what he sang, cause you already know, I don’t have to tell you he tore the house up, cause you already know. So until Lee and The QC's decides he’s going to change up on us and give us some of the new songs I’m going to end this review and others to come by saying this … and then came Lee.

Lee Williams's Anniversary in Richmond, VA

I was blessed with the opportunity to go to the big program in Richmond, VA on April 17, 2005. I must say I am a fan of Doc McKenzie and Keith "Wonderboy" Johnson and I did enjoy their performances...even though they talked too much. I also enjoyed the Williams Brothers, especially when they sang "Still Here." They also talked too much. Slim did a great job and I'm sure Lee Williams pleased his crowd. The building was beautiful, but I think for a show like, the theater seating may be helpful for viewing from the back and sides. The biggest grip I would have with this program or any for that matter is the groups could use a little more variety in their performances. As many hits as these groups have, people shouldn't be able to predict exactly what they are going to  sing at every show.
With all that being said, I give this program a 7.8 rating.

2nd Review

It was held in the Ballroom Pavillion of the Richmond Convention Center Sun. April 17, 2005.

Some of the groups were really concerned about the promoter having to move the location the week of the program. I heard some say they’d never seen a program do really well after it was moved so close to the date of the program. But it didn’t bother this production at all. I don’t think anybody else could have gotten in anyway.

Now me, I’m a person that goes about an hour after it starts, cause usually that’s when the program gets going. Not this time. I got there a half hour before the doors opened and the line was well on its way to wrapping around the building. Whoever said Quartet was dieing out should have been at this one. The Ballroom Pavillion has Seating for 2,750 people theatre-style and there were very few if any seats left in the back, back, back. In fact when I left, people were standing on the back wall just as happy and friendly as can be. Could’ve been cuz they had the priveledge of viewing in the auditorium 2 huge big screen on both sides of the stage. Which brings me to the Ushers, they were so pleasant and helpful. Our usher met us midway the floor when we were looking I guess bewildered at the over half packed auditorium at 3:30 pm. He said oh, would you all like to sit down closer? Of course we said yes and we sat on the 3rd row to our surprise. Now that did it for me. I mean my experience with Ushers at this type of event has been them bum rushing you at the door with, “uh ya’ll gone have to find a seat upstairs, ain’t no seats down here”. Then you rush upstairs find your own seat and look at empty seats or coat filled seats scattered among the crowd downstairs and you think $25 dollars, that should be my seat down there! But not so in Richmond. This was definitely a professional and well organized program.I even saw the MC make an announcement about video/cell phone recordings and actually send people out to enforce it. I know the groups appreciated not having to worry with that nuisance.

The place was absolutely beautiful as you can see. But parking was an extra $12 and people paid it like , oh well, tsk, tsk. Not me. I put my $12 in the gas tank/ or my tank (not sure which one, I spent it) and walked an extra block to a free street meter park.(Sunday)

There were no local  artist on the bill. Slim & The Supreme Angels rocked the house right off the bat. They introduced the MC’s (very chummy, friendly guys), welcomed the crowd, thanked the crowd for coming, made the no videoing announcement and The Supreme Angels took it from there. It was on! NO devotion. Just song service! I personally like a  devotion. Scripture and prayer I feel, should start any service, but noone seemed to have a problem with it. And the house rocked on with the Angels. The audience sang and screamed and shouted the whole time the Angels were on the floor. The sound went out briefly on “Have You Heard the News”, but the crowd double clapped and stomped and Rev. Hunt danced it right back on. Nope didn’t miss a beat.

Keith “Wonderboy” came up next and the crowd  loved em. They did wonderful rendition of “I’m Trying to Get Ready”, kinda ole school Violinaire style. The crowd   smiled and nodded in approval at this group of young men acknowledging their roots in such a reverent and spirit-filled way.  They also did some of their old as well as new. They walked in on “Be Right” and ended on “Let Go, Let God Have His Way.”

Comedian Linwood Williams(?), took the stage and gave the audience a much needed comedy break. He really lightened up the place with cracks about family life, the church and Lee Williams. The audience seemed to enjoy him.

Between each group PRAISE Radio Station gave away water bottles, CD’s, key chains and t-shirts to the audience.

Doc McKenzie came up and the audience pretty much sat still during his delivery of the first 4 songs. But then Doc took us to the pool. You know how we love the pool! You talking bout some sanging and dancing goin on, The Pavillion Ballroom was lit up once again. Doc walked out on “I’ve WON”, they walked off the stage singing this one. I sat near the front so I heard em well. People in the back, oh well did I mention the place would seat 2,750 people. You figure the rest.

The Williams Brothers minus Henry Green, hit the stage after Doc. They came out on “I’m Just Waiting on Jesus” and the crowd responded with thuderous applause. They did their staple “I’m Just a Nobody” Everything was just so polish and precise and wonderful. Lee joined them for a lil “Cooling WATER” The audience seem to love” I’m Still Here better than anything they sang. Well it was easy to see the Brothas have earned a special place in the hearts of the Virginians.  They left the stage with Dwight Gordan and Doug Williams battling it out of the “Pray On My Child” run, with much of the Mighty Clouds flavor.

Then the Ice Man himself hit the floor. Lee  Williaims ya’ll, and with a new ( did ya hear me, NEW) song. Scooby led it, something like, “I’m Glad I’m Here”. It was good. You caught em off guard, Lee. Yep, stunned em even. Oh yes, Lee did do some different songs. Lee shocked the city and tore up the house as he normally does.  Afterall it was his 3rd Anniversary! When I left he was sti—ii—iil sanging and the crowd was dancing in the aisles. For more details you’ll have to ask someone that went and stayed til the very end.

C'mon, C'mon, ...Let's Have a Good Time!

The  4th  of July Explosion!

Needless to say, but just for the record, I’ll say it anyway… Nobody does it finer than the folks in CAROLINA!   To God be the GLORY, we are “Kings Kids.” We are BLESSED, and we walk in our BLESSINGS. Come what may, we know there’s nothing too hard for God and he’s our Daddy!

The  4th  of July Explosion was just that an EXPLOSION!

It blew up and the fuse is still ignited even though the doors have been locked, the artist, vendors, promoters, supporters have all long gone home and yet the chatter and reviews continue to keep the program fresh in the hearts of all that attended.

My heart goes out to those of you that couldn’t attend, for that reason I’ll fill you in. I was there and I’m gonna bring it to you like I saw it. No more and no less. We keep it real in the CAROLINAS! After all, we’re living this life to live again and we refuse to miss the kingdom for bearing false witness.

H-O-T,  H-O-T,  H-O-T!

Yes Sa!

I’m talking sho nuff, air conditioning failure…HOT!

But, afterall it was an EXPLOSION! Ain’t no explosion without the fire and as hot as it was, it didn’t stop folks from going down frontstage (as Doc would say, “to the pool”)and shouting and dancing and praising God throughout the service! You hear me? Now hear me well, I said they didn’t shout as one group ministered. I said they shouted throughout the entire service. And if that wasn’t enough, we ate fried chicken, shrimp and the best fried fish I’ve ever had (at a gospel sing) all of it fresh out of the hot sizzling grease! Then on top of that, we sat down to the front where everybody sat shoulder to shoulder right up on each other so we could  fellowship and rejoice with saints from all up and down the East Coast, cuz that how we mingle in the CAROLINAS. We realize we’re about midway the East Coast, so we’re comfortable with the Northerners and the Southerners and we make em all feel at home when they come to visit us. So Yep! It was hot, but people…it was billed as an EXPLOSION!  And you knew we were gonna blow it up in the Carolinas, that’s just what we do, here!

That’s why there were buses and people  from Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, New York, Mississippi, Alabama and some places I don’t remember, so I won’t list them.

We rode a MontiTours van with brothers David and Spencer Montague from NC. (how’s that for a plug guys?) We rode about 3 hours and I was greeted personally by “The Queen” Coleman herself and I thought what a special, personal touch. Only Loretta could pull that one off with all she had going on. I mean when we walked in, there were already 20 tables of vendors setup with music, clothes, jewelry, dinners and my favorite… souveneir Tshirts! And “The Duke” himself, Lee Williams, was available and adding his personal signature to anyone that asked.

First on stage was SALVATION, a group of about 7 songsters, men and women from a church in SC. The leader kinda looked like Ty Tribbet and that gang. I thought, ok they’ve added a contemporary group on us here, it’s all good. But he opened singing The Canton Spiritual’s, “Morning Dove” and I’m telling you this boy had skills and the smoothest delivery you wanted to hear. The crowd showed their appreciation and approval by encouraging him all through the song to… “ take yo time and sang it”. They sang 2 other songs and REDEMPTION followed them. They were quite refreshing. They’re songs were of a different flavor. I detected a little of the Bill Gaither Ole time gospel singing in their presentation, which was a welcome addition to our traditional quartet service. I especially like the zeal their 1st tenor singer brought to the stage. They were very good. It was easy to see who the home crowd pets were, The Rising Stars of Eastover walked up on the stage and by the time the musicians hit the first chord the crowd was already in it. They seemed to especially like the fellow that steps up from the back to lead.I don’t know, but they all looked like brothers. But it was obvious the backbone of the group was the younger keyboard player. He shared a testimony of being in the hospital just the day before the program. The young man got off the keyboard another fellow replaced him, which freed him to minister in song and he did. He walked the audience over, it was fantastic and I thought, these aren’t even the heavyweights yet. My we are in for a real ride here! The MC announced a break, people went to the concession stand and to patronize the vendors, then the MC called up…

Lil Willie & The Keynotes. The mikes gave some resistance , but nothing we couldn’t tolerate. The group was really good. Lil Willie seemed especially happy and the crowd rocked and reeled with delight. Then he called out Niq, and he was in good voice and the crowd embraced him as well. They did probably 4 songs and decided to close with “Jesus is on the Mainline”. I’ll tell you, that second lead singer on the right,  had some real fancy footwork for us. He danced off stage right on out to the audience. He was met there with some more dancers from the audience, he danced with them, went back on stage and had to be escorted off stage in preparation for the next group.  Alright we’re still working toward this explosion and the house is getting hotter by the minute.

We waited a really , really  long time because the mikes were giving the stage crew some problems, the MC announced they were working on the mikes. He read our flyers and then we got restless. I heard 2 or 3 hand clap hurries go forth in different sections of the building. But we continued to wait and Keith Wonderboy Johnson & the Spiritual Voices came to the stage. The band was already on stage while they were trying to fix the mikes. They were still faulty, but nothing we couldn’t tolerate. Keith did his lineup that included his signature hits. He opened with “Send a Revival”, he did “Hide Behind the Mt.” “Be Right”, he introduced us to a new song on his new project that is soon to come. Nice touch Keith, always leave em with something to look forward to. He closed with “Let Go & Let God Have His Way”, the audience was really fond of that one. They danced again.

Well as the hour draws later, the place got hotter and the mikes were getting worse.

Next, I believe the Gentlemen of the South, those Jackson Southernaires hit the stage and they were so—ooo sharp! They always are. Huey opened with “Beulah Land” and we bobbed and rocked with him and enjoyed a break from the Radical Praise licks of the Spiritual Voices. The Southernaires sang about four more songs and the new singer shared the lead on 2 of those selections. But it wasn’t until the band struck up “Anniversary”, that the entire building stood in approval and Brother Huey gave us that big smile and took things into his hands, the saints loved every minute of it.

Then came Darrell McFadden & The Disciples down the middle aisle and the  crowd sensed the excitement in the air. They were the first group to walk down front and center, plus it’s been a while since we’ve seen them here on a program of this magnitude. So we greeted them with great expectations. The band struck up “Have You Heard of a City”, the singers grabbed the mikes and the mikes went D E A d and that created a problem for us. They finished the song without the mikes. Then they gathered around one mike in tribute to ole time sangin and did “C’mon & See About Me” and God did. The mikes came back up and the crowd responded with thunderous shouts. They began “I Can’t Even Walk” and Darrell was doing some of the best singing I’ve heard in a while and the mikes vacated again, and they stepped to the front of the stage and showed the crowd how well they could tune without mikes (that’s what professionals do, they rise to the occasion). The mikes came back up and they finished with “Long as I Got Jesus”. Determined not to let the mikes get the best of them they sang, danced , jumped off stage, went back on stage, sang, danced , jumped off stage and then they escorted each other off the stage. The band played on and the crowd went wild and so did the band!

Then came Lee Williams, yall! I moved to the back, I found out it was a little cooler back there and I enjoyed him from afar. The mikes were still in and out, but Lee sang and by the time he got to “I Can’t Give Up” they were back on and his delivery was excellent!  He didn’t bring us anything new, but he’s Lee and he really doesn’t have to. That’s right, just rock and sang Lee. What ever you sing will be just… fine!

We waited a while and some things were changed, don’t ask me what, cause I don’t know. But when The Supreme Angels struck a chord after 5 hours in extreme heat, the place rose to their feet. Nobody said ya’ll stand to your feet, yall clap your hands, yall come down front. The holy spirit was in the house and the crowd was in it from the first chord they hit Over Yonder. ‘I have never in my life heard Sugar, and I know he can and will play on the drop of a dime, but I ain’t never heard that man play like he played at this Explosion! I heard the lead guitar roar, no kidding, more than twice. Rev. Hunt sang Under the Blood”, God’s Got It,” Darrell McFadden sang that one with them and that was a special treat. I love it when they give us something special. Rev. Hunt keyed up “Saints in Praise” and I thought Quincy and Mike had fixed the air conditioner for a minute, cuz they sure did everything else and the crowd was on their feet through it all . I’m telling you they went to work in that Cantey Building! They left the stage on that one, I mean that’s all they could do, everything else had been done. They even fixed the mikes, That’s right they didn’t go out anymore as I recall.

Then came the SuperStar, Tommy Ellison & The 5 Singing Stars. They wore French Vanilla long tail tuxedos and they were quite dapper. Their SC fan club presented them a beautiful trophy. It was absolutely huge and such a thoughtful gesture with Tommy being honored along with Lee Williams. Tommy Ellison & The 5 Singing Stars sang a medly of songs. I distinctly remember how good “I’m Not the Same Person” sounded and of course their signature song “Holy Ghost”. But we didn ‘t get to Sail at all. Imagine that. The program was over about 11:30 or so. You can count the hours and the groups with a few malfunctions, but the good definitely outweighed the bad and the devil gets no GLORY for this EXPLOSION! All the glory belongs to GOD! And Loretta you get a pat on the back for allowing God to use you to promote such a great event. Continue to Work, Continue to STAND.

Having done all to Stand….STAND! cuz …

That’s how we do it in the CAROLINAS!

Homecoming Celebration for Joe Horn!

Joe Horn Jerome / Evereadys The Christianaires Doc / Hilites

Saturday, July 16th we took a nice ride down to Weldon, NC ( not to long or short, about an hour an a half) to support The Homecoming  of NFL Superstar, Joe Horn. The flyer told us we’d see The Eveready’s of Detroit, The True Believers of McComb, MS, Greg Kelly & Foundation, Darian Horn & No Compromise and Paul Porter & The Christianaires. Well, we saw everyone listed except The True Believers. However there was a wonderful addition to the program, Doc McKenzie & The Hilites. So, let me just tell you, there were no complaints about having to listen to Doc & The Hilites. In fact I couldn’t even imagine that program without them being there. They turned the place out!

The only complaints I heard were about bleachers and the heat in the GYM! Oh, My GOD! Honestly until Sunday at a small church in Zebulon, I had never been to a hotter place in my life! What’s up with these air conditioners, people? This is my 4th big program this summer and I haven’t been able to enjoy and air conditioned one yet. But anyway….life goes on.

Weldon is a small rural town that boast a population of about 1,374 people. It’s about 35 miles North of Rocky Mt., straight up I 95. But why is that important? Because it’s the home of NFL Superstar, and new gospel music record label owner and CEO, Joe Horn and Saturday was his homecoming! The best I could understand, it was also their family reunion. I have had the pleasure of attending 2 of the Pioneer Banquets he sponsors at the GMWA annually. So you can see Mr. Horn is a philanthropist in his own right and he’s helping us to preserve our rich legacy of gospel music…So hats off to you, Mr. Horn. Let’s all pray that more "Joe Horns" will step on the scene and will develop a desire to create avenues to spread the gospel, be proud of their ethnicity and give back to our community and children the music and gifts that hold such a dear place in our hearts today. Accolades to you my Brotha!

Back to the program…Well I got lost trying to find the school , but when we arrived, Greg Kelly was dancing down the bleacher aisle. Yep, I did say bleachers. It was held in the Weldon High School Gymnasium. There were about 4 buses in the backstage parking lot when we arrived.

Two big fans (not people, cooling fans) were running in the top of the building, but mind you, this program was scheduled to start at 3:00 in the afternoon. Now I got there at 6:05 and some people told me I had only missed one group, so you do the math. I will say that several people I talked to, said they really wanted to come and tried hard to make it, but just couldn’t get there that early in the day. But it would have been hot either way, night or day. But now here’s a BIG compliment. We were out by 9:15. I mean it was just  turning dark outside.

The heat did little to stop the crowd from getting into the service! You know how we PRAISE GOD in The CAROLINAS! In season, out of season. In heat , out of heat.

We could hear Greg Kelly and Foundation all the way out in the parking lot and they were sounding mighty good. But we walked in to find Greg dancing down the aisle, shirt ringing sweat and the saints on the floor right with him. When Greg Kelly & Foundation finished singing, Sis. Evangeline Bullock of “Shine a Little Light Productions” took the mike and controlled the direction of the program as MC. She called an Ensemble, I believe from Miss. Please forgive me, I can’t remember their name but they were GREAT! I do remember them having a guest soloist that did some previous recording with the Thompson Community Choir, (one of my favorite choirs). Her name was Kim McFarland and she was a real songster. She had a great voice and a special delivery that brought the crowd to their feet. When she finished, she took her seat back in the bleachers. That was interesting. I’m so used to the groups leaving, going out the back or side door. Afterwards, Joe Horn was introduced. He greeted the crowd and thanked everyone for coming. He talked about his seriousness in the business. He reflected on how the artist had such a good impact on so many people’s lives and how he was just tired of them not getting the returns on the great work they were doing. The audience nodded in approval. He introduced his staff individually and gave a brief history on each staff member present. Tyrone, Terrell and Midge waved at the crowd from the audience. Paul Porter came up to the mike and greeted the audience front and center. (smile, you know a leader will always rise to the occasion) Joe made us feel welcome, told us about his Weldon family and the new record label and in a timely manner, turned the program back over to the MC. But I’ll say this about Joe Horn he sat in the audience and mingled with the people. He didn’t come from the back room he sat in the heat with us and enjoyed the program. He also signed shirts and pictures. When I left, he was still signing. It’s great to see a young man of that stamina making himself available to others. It takes a special kind of person to have money and power at their fingertips and invest time and money into the needs of others. Can you say… “Fruits of the Spirit”?

Then came The Eveready’s! It was quite obvious many people had come to welcome them back into the Industry. They opened with the hymn “Be Still My Soul” and displayed their range, timing and vocal skills as the audience cheered and squealed in delight…they followed with “If I Had a Chance,” “Stop By Here” and of course they sealed their performance with “Learning to Lean” oh yes indeed, “our Eveready’s are back!

Is There Anybody Here, that Loves the Lord, Like I do…Stand Up! You got it. Those “House Rockin, Christianaires” graced the mikes and it was full speed ahead. When they said Stand Up, We Got Up and stayed Up! Then we got our “Two Wings” and flew away. But the Holy Spirit overtook the house during their delivery of “You’ve Been So Good”.

Doc McKenzie & The Hilites were an unexpected welcome addition to this Homecoming Celebration! Now you and I both know, they can represent the CAROLINAS, on any program anywhere, anytime with anyone. And everybody will still be talking about Doc & The Hilites long after they’ve gone home. Benny (former keyboard player) was at the celebration. He looked well and it was a blessing to see him in the house again. When I saw him, he was in “the pool” pearched right in front of the speaker, rocking in his chair and taking it all in. Honestly, it was a streak of genius to include Doc & The Hilites on this one. They closed it, like only Doc and The Hilites can close. “I’ve WON! Down the aisle and through the door…He fought the battle, I’VE WON!    ---------G-L-O-R-Y!

Nice Crowd, Wednesday Night

Tonex ministers to the Youth

Saints in Praise, Where's Luther?

There's Pastor Shirley in the Pink.

July 18-22, Raleigh, NC

Tuesday Night at the Shirley C conference,  Donnie Mc.... preached up a storm and Rizen Oh my God! They rocked, outfits and all! I left there at about 11:45pm, but I just could not leave! There was lady that came with Evangeline B that only had her necklace to give in the offering and one of the mother of Rizen called asked Donnie McClurkin to call the lady back to the front, and so the lady came back up front, and then Rizen's mother gave $100.00 for the lady then blessed the lady with a couple of hundreds and the place was tore up from that point on!!! Donnie preached about the church being in us and not in the building!! Then he had a altar call for Homosexuals and Lesbians and Bisexuals that are struggling and want to be delivered!! Oh God, that was a move of God that I have never ever seen before! Donnie talked about how he dealt with the same thing and the altar was flooded! Oh God it was very powerful!

Wednesday Night - Ty Tribbet tore the place all the way up! Luther Barnes sang, Danita Washington sang. They took up the offering ..hundred dollar, twenty dollar on down. Then Pastor Ceasar introduced Tone'. He rapped a portion of his new project he did with Pastor Shirley, then told us to buy it in Sept. From there the man preached. His topic was "Half Baked". He emphasized the fact that many were stepping out into the ministry without being purged and fully prepared to effectively do the will of God, because we are simply "half-baked", not done. It was a right now WORD! Then they had alter call for young people that wanted to submit fully to the Lord and asked people to give and invest in themselves only if their heart had been persuaded to do so. You could give money or jewelry. I left around 11:30, people were still at the alter. There was a really nice large crowd, it seemed their were oodles of young people there, Wednesday.

Friday Night - The Williams Brothers didn"t  make it to the conference. Paula White is a true sister, and she really got down and she preached and taught the word of God. Neal Robinson, Shun Pace and Dorinda Clark Cole sang a song a each.-----Relaxing in Raleigh

Thanks Pastor Shirley, for what you do in our community.

May God continue to bless your ministry as you continue to bless others.

What a wonderful spirit-filled song-service we experienced at Gospel Sponsor Emily Johnson’s Anniversary, Sat. night, July 30th.  The event was held at the Chatham High School Auditorium in Chatham, VA. While en route to the school we tuned in to Danville Radio Station and heard the radio angel  (I believe it was Antoine) playing the True Believers featured guest on the anniversary, and telling the listening audience where they could hear the True Believers Sat. night. It was all so exciting and just the way it should be, the artists, promoters and media working together to ensure that the gospel “good news” reaches the masses.

We were on time and arrived to see musicians already onstage providing music for an eagerly awaiting auditorium of well wishers and gospel supporters from places as far as north as New York and as far down south as Georgia. (that East Coast Connection)

As an extra special touch the honoree, Emily Johnson and her group, The Soulettes opened the service with Scripture, prayer and song. They sang with power and  conviction which set the atmosphere for an evening of praise and adoration to Almighty God and all knowing God. They sang well and looked beautiful in their Lime almost fluorescent green. Emily told us that her uniform was courtesy of  Doc McKenzie, and it was especially pretty with the wrist corsage presented to her by one of her close friends midway the program. From the way she carried out the service, even if you did not know Emily, you knew by the compliments from the artist, promoters and radio personnel, and family in attendance, that she does a lot of good in her neighborhood and is loved dearly.

Emily & The Soulettes sang without Jackie,(who’s recovering from surgery) but she read the devotional scripture and refused to let the night pass without her soul stirring testimony and introducing Special Guest, Jay Caldwell and The Gospel Ambassadors of Wilmington, Delaware. She also offered us an awesome rendition of “One Day at a Time” along with Jay. As I said before, the evening was filled with special treats and personal touches that made for an unforgettable Anniversary/Praise service.

The MC was introduced and The Children of God of Eden, NC eagerly graced the stage with one of the sanginest young ladies I’ve seen in quite sometime. She was a powerful lead singer with great vocal control and a voice that commanded your attention to the lyrics of the each song. I am looking forward to hearing them again very soon.

Then we witnessed the song ministry of The Joybells of Axton, VA. I could tell by the audience’s reception when they hit the stage, that we were in for something special and I was right on point. These ladies took me back to the good ole choir days, when their spokesperson came out and gave us a backdrop for each song and told us what  they’d be singing. There was no talking between songs, just sangin and praising God.  I can’t remember the name of the first song. Something about being “Too Busy”. It really showcased their vocal ability and whoever wrote it, really took it up a notch. The harmony was so-oo full, minors and 5th’s and all of it blended so smoothly. The lead vocalist was so gifted, her delivery gave it just the right flavor. It was my favorite, guess you can tell. They followed with 3 more songs, all of them very good.

Then our beloved Kingdom Heirs of Raleigh, made us so-oo proud. They always do, with their consistent manner of professionalism and their love for God and his music. I absolutely adore their ability to present such a wide variety of gospel styles with such expertise and precision. Bro. David shared a personal testimony with the audience and the Saints were in Praise the rest of the evening. They are one of the few groups that can tear the house up with an ole familiar hymn “Yes, God Is Real”. Kingdom Heirs seriously, I know you’ll read this…don’t ever remove that song from your repertoire! You sing it with such conviction, it can be felt throughout the auditorium. You know how they say everyone has a song? That one is yours. No one sings it like you do. That’s a keeper!

Jay Caldwell and the Gospel Ambassadors came up rather quietly with “He Without Sin, Let Him Cast the First Stone” and the audience screamed in appreciation. They sang song after song and they kept sounding better and better. I mean really, they could have sung the rest of the night and we would have loved every minute of it. Everyone was just smiling and rocking and waving hands. It was all so clear and those hymns are so inclusive. Really, if you listen to the words of a hymn in it’s entirety, you will see you or something you can identify with before that song is over. That’s why they never grow old. Think about it…”Is Your All on the Alter”, Peace in The Valley, I Surrender All. If you listen to the words you will definitely find yourself somewhere within the song. Then at the end, Jay waved his shoes in the air and you know what happened…Yep, Moses Take Your Shoes Off…it’s Holy Ground.     Need I say more?

The True Believers closed things out in that true Mississippi manner. They let the band play on. Oh my goodness! They had this young drummer I don’t know the child’s name. He looked to be about 14, maybe. I mean the brotha is bad! He was a real blessing. I don’t know how in the world this boy as young as he looked, could have even lived long enough to learn to play like he is playing. He’s a blessing, I tell you. I can’t say anymore, you’ve got to see him for yourself. He and the bass player fed off each other. Don’t separate guys, I’m serious, you are good for each other. I hope you’re some kin. The bass player would make you rock your head, til it hurts. He feels it and you will too These guys are awesome. You need to see them. The True Believers have a great music ministry. All of them lead very well. They testify, sing and dance til the power comes down. This was my first time hearing them sing in concert and I really enjoyed them. They connect with the audience well. They even allowed supporters to come up and sing with them. The audience especially enjoyed hearing their homeboys sing with professional artist …”Oooh Weee, Another Blessing!”

It started at 7 and we were out around 11. They said, “we’re gonna have you out in time for you to get to Sunday School in the morning” and they did. I really appreciated that.

Great Job,

Emily  & “Friends Connection”

I took a 4 hour drive Friday Night down to Orangeburg, SC to ”Friday Night Live”

I got just a little lost, but I got there in time to witness the ministry of  The Gospel Legends, Flossie & The Singing Sisters, Harvey Watkins Jr. & The Canton Spirituals and Doc McKenzie and The Hilites.

When I got there I was warmly received at the door by the hostess herself, “The Queen, Coleman”. I knew it would be a great night right away. You always get a better feeling about a program when the promoter is on the floor, greeting guest, participating in the service and conducting the gospel train.

The Gospel Legends did an outstanding  job onstage. It’s was quite obvious they are the hometown favorites down that way. I love that song “When I Get to Heaven….shout shout everybody shout, yeah you know it. They’ll be Loiusburg Sat at the Clifton Bros.Appreciation Banquet and I know their gonna do it. NC hasn’t heard them do it. So we’re in for a special treat. Details are here. http://www.programsinthecarolinas.com/we%20care%20events.htm

How’s that for a plug?

Flossie and the Singing Sisters were up next. That was my first chance to see them. I purchased the CD last week and I’d been told by several people that I needed to see them “live” and now I see why that recommendation was made. Flossie is a highly anointed gospel singer. The CD is very good but the “live “ service is much better.

I want to share something I saw at this program, speaking from a promoter’s perspective and we’re always looking for ways to enhance our services and make them better. At “Friday Night Live” between groups rather than the promoters rambling on to pass time, while the groups were setting up they allowed willing individuals to come on stage and sing portions of songs. I thoroughly enjoyed this, being a singer/musician myself, it was really a wonderful experience to me. I mean gifted people are always looking for opportunities to showcase their skills. What better place than at the program with a Live audience, great musicians, professional sound systems and in front of hundreds sometimes thousands of people that love good singin. Not to mention the possibility that one of the groups may be in need of someone with your vocal ability. It could prove to be a very worthwhile experience for everyone involved. What a great use of excess time, promoters. Kind of gave it a little Star Search flavor until the groups were ready, then of course it was back to church. But meanwhile, don’t forget to announce those flyers!

Harvey & The Cantons were awesome. I hadn’t seen them in ages it seems. They were very good. However I did miss Victor, Wallace and Dwayne. But Harvey Jr. delivered “Morning Dove” as only Harvey can do. It was sho nuff pretty. Ya’ll know how that man sings it. Smooth as silk. People just nodded at each other and smiled, cuz we realized  Harvey Jr. was Mr. “Friday Night Live”. Then Harvey did an awesome job of connecting with the audience like he always does. He thanked us for coming and supporting the program. Honestly, he ‘s one of the most congenial lead singers on the road today. He puts you at ease and then ministers from the heart. Of course he talked about his church and his love for God, his church and his Mom. It was a beautiful experience. Harvey said they were going to cut it short because others had to sing. But I got there late and saw some people taking Chicken to the bus. So I think he was headed in that direction.

Doc reset the stage and the Hilites took over.

They asked the audience what they wanted to hear and went to work on those songs. It was fantastic! Benny was on keyboard. That’s 2 weeks in a row I’ve seen him. I hope that means he’s back! Nobody does it like Benny. I think his name is Zack, he also played Friday night. Doc did about six songs, said the benediction and continued to sing as people walked or tried to walk out. The majority ended up coming back to sit down and listening to about 8 more songs after the service had been dismissed. What can we say, I didn’t move. I just don’t move when I hear good singing.

Here’s a question and check yourself on this one…

Why would people sneak in the back door of a program, not paying a dime. Find a seat, then witness with their hands, faken and shaken shoutin til the program has ended? If you’re one of those people please stop. Be honest, that’s the same as stealing. There are people watching you and God sees and knows ALL!

Great program Loretta, Hope you don’t mind the vent, maybe some people will take inventory and  turn from their wicked ways.

Hey Queen....Please Continue to bring us the best in Gospel.

"The Tamborine Lady", Everybody Shout!

This is a review of the Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006 Praise Service in Columbia, SC.

It happened  around the 4:30 hour we gathered at the Lower Richland High School for our 2006 Praise Service. Loretta Coleman, promoted this service, and service it was. There were people from all around. I personally talked with people from Florida, Boston, New York, Rhode Island, Baltimore, Virginia, North Carolina and of course as Darrell McFadden loves to say, “good ole South Carolina” showed up and showed out! Of course you know, there were many people present I didn’t get to speak to.

The event was hosted by the songster herself, Sis. Flossie of the Singing Sisters of the host state, SC. She was a pure joy and conducted the “Love Train” throughout the evening with ease, perfection and spiritual discern. She was tactful, considerate, respectful and quite an entertainer whenever the need surfaced. Occassionaly, she’d get a little help, but most of the evening we were blessed and happy to be onboard the “Love Train” with Sis. Flossie. She knew the route well!

Serenity of Baltimore opened the Praise Service with an accapella number that had some of the style of the original Harmonizing Four. It was the kind of singing we seldom hear anymore and it really showcase their vocal ability. The audieince was pleased with their no nonsense approach to traditional gospel. Not to mention these girls could really sing and had great arrangements. As they continued to minister they began to incorporate more contemporary runs into their selections.

Tony & The Magnificent Voices of Durham, NC took center stage following Serenity. They’re always crowd pleasers everywhere they go. It’s so refreshing to see a family of adults and children still working and traveling together and enjoying each others talents and gifts, all in the name of Jesus. And let’s not forget the family can and will sang! The crowd especially liked “Oh What a Change” and the closing rendition which allows the musicians to get their praise on. Oddly enough, Sunday only the drummer hit her solo. But she did more than enough to send the other group musicians that had come back into the auditorium to witness the groups’s delivery, reeling in the rafters with sheer delight. I mean the other musicians were jumpin and high fiveing each other in the bleachers as girlfriend beat the drums unmercifully, grabbed her snare and left. Case closed!

Rev. Matthew Mickens & The New Highway Travelers came out just as smooth as pure silk. They were so professional and easy to listen to. This was my very first experience hearing them, but I absolutely love their stage presence. That young man on that lead guitar sings with less effort than it takes for you and I to breathe. I think the crowd was calling him Justin. He is something to behold! Can you say GIFTED? But have you noticed that about people that are truly gifted? Seriously, it’s like they aren’t even aware of what they’re doing, it’s just natural for them. I hear people say all the time, you can’t be effective without tearing up your face, you can’t do nothing looking cute. I’m just saying, I don’t know ya’ll! I’ve just seen too many folks ministering to God’s people in a mighty way, that just stand there and allow the Lord to use them. They’re not running and jumping off the stage or any of that. They just stand there and allow the spirit to manifest in the house. The crowd was especially fond of Rev. Mickens as he just “let go and let God” use him to render their last two selections. Personally, I can hardly wait to hear them again.

Veronica & The Blazing Stars, Oh My God! If that ain’t one singing woman then who is? They tore up house with “How Blessed You Are” and my favorite “Lord It’s in Your Hands”. Now I don’t know names, but I did see the drummer has left the drums and  moved up to the second line on guitar, background vocals and second lead. Can you say multitalented? Now of course being in SC, we got to see “MEAT work the floor with his famous strut much to crowd’s approval. I tried to get a picture, but so many people ran down to join the dance I couldn’t get close enough. Then I can’t forget the other background singer and I apologize for not knowing names. But the brotha came in wearing an arm cast and lost it on the second song and when he went out the door after singing, he was dangling it in his hand! Now c’mon, where else but in CAROLINA, huh?

Lil Willie & The Keynotes they were very good. I’ve never seen Lil Willie come out into the crowd and minister like he did Sunday night. He usually addresses his audience with the group. But he stepped to us Sunday. I really thought the direct contact with the audience had a great impact on the effectiveness his delivery. But you know, I really missed the other guy that ad libs on “This Heart of Mine”, you know the dancer. I mean face it, just about all Black gospel quartets have one or two. I think Darrell McFadden has 3. But that’s another story. But the guitar player did get his step in before leaving and of course the crowd danced with him too. There was a lady there, (her picture’s here). She could beat the tambourine with the best of em. I did make a point to speak to her about it. I kept trying to figure out why my playing doesn’t sound like that. But she really pumped it up with Lil Wille and the Keynotes.

George Dean & The Gospel Four as soon as the band struck the first chord, people left the rafters and joined “The FOUR” on the floor. “Ready or Not, Jesus is Coming Again”. and the house was ready! Oh, I forgot to tell you George walked in earlier to enjoy the program with the audience and as soon as he got midway the aisle the crowd clapped and cheered. George smile and waved and  picked up his walking pace.. Mmm wonder if he’s kind a bashful in public? But one thing I really liked about this 2006 Praise Service was that all of the groups spent a great deal of time inside the service with the audience listening and enjoying each other. The Gospel Four did what they usually do…wrecked the place real quick. They did sing “CLOSER” this time, and they sang it beautifully as it was a special request by one of the Praise service attendees.

Question… why do the groups save the request for last and then have to cut them short? If you have the answer, email me from the site. Better still, I think I’ll post that question on the message board, you can hit it from the Home Page.

Luther Barnes & The Sunset Jubilaires It was during Luther’s delivery of “It’s Your Time” that the holy spirit moved into the auditorium and completely engulfed the house in it’s entirety. For about 10 minutes, he was unable to sing, the band ceased to play and all you could hear was saints edifying God in Praise! Time just stood still and the Holy Ghost had it’s way. Everybody there witnessed it for themselves.  Saints, our God is truly an awesome God”, and it was beyond astonishing the way God chose to manifest himself Sunday night. “You Ought to Been There, when the Holy Ghost fell.”

The Sunsets followed It’s Your Time with “Wherever I Go” and there was just a sweet spirit in the place. They sang a welcome new addition to their lineup, “Don’t You Be Afraid”. The audience nodded in approval and they left the stage with “I’m Determined”. We don’t know what Luther was going through when he wrote that one, but It’s quite obvious it’s one of his favorites because he’s been using it to close his portion of the service for many years. I especially like the young person on the back line that presents the audience with Ladies & Gentlemen… The Stella Award winning Luther Barnes & The Sunset Jubilaires!!!!!!!! I absolutely love that part!

Darrell McFadden & The Disciples and The Disciple Jrs. Well, what can you say? He’s an awesome lead singer, The band’s completely out of this world. The background is strong and the harmony’s extremely tight and you see all these young guys doing this and pratically all of the songs they sing are staples from back in the day. “Have You Heard of a City”, “Can’t Even Walk”, “Long as I’ve Got Jesus That’s Alright”. You can really tell these guys were born and bread into the quartet industry from day one. They are bursting with energy that sometimes get the best of those of us that are a little more settled in. But the young folks absolutely adore them and don’t mind letting them know it. Sunday night, they walked on with their new one, “I Want to be Ready, when Jesus Comes”. And honestly, they hit that one so hard I had to jump with em that time! Ya’ll just had to  s’cuuuse… me. But they also brought us some treats. They brought the crowd colored, I mean professional photos of the group. I thought what a nice gesture and marketing strategy…. you go boys ( stay on your toes)! Then they let us hear from the Disciple Jrs. (which I was told were Darrell’s sons (I don’t know). But the babies could sang. I saw 3 but it sounded like a small army of em. Everyone of them could run a drive  to the hilt. Which of course freed the others to dance the audience into a frenzy. Yep, New York tried to run our Carolina “Love Train” right off the track, but we held on for The Doctor himself.

Doc McKenzie & The Hilites  OK the Dr. took us on into the midnight hour and the second day of the New Year. I was kinda waiting to hear this new guy in the background and hear what a difference he’d bring to the group. I mean everyone already knows how the Dr. operates (very skillfully). Well, what can you say?  Brotha man ain’t missed a beat. He sangs super hard. Oh,  OK hears an illustration for ya. You know how hard Rodney sings?

Ok, the two are one. This brotha has antics that remind you of Rodney. The both of them are very physical singers that expel oodles of energy onstage. But I’ll say this, the brotha won’t be able to stand that second line too long. Right now you can see he’s putting forth some real effort to do background and fill in the need. But trust me, the brothas’ gonna burst anyday now. Hard as that man sings there’s no way that back line can hold him down. I don’t know where he came from. I heard he used to sing with Doc awhile back. I don’t know but the brotha is bad.

Doc did a song from back in the day and it was beautiful. The name escapes me now, but I do long to hear that one again, Darrel. I know you hit the site. So remember, I’m looking to hear that song again. Doc did his work and I don’t remember if he called em to the pool or they went on their own. But I know the pool was rockin Sunday in SC.

I stayed til the end. It was an awesome 2006 Praise Service!

Loretta, girl you hung in there on that one.

Blessings to ya.

God gets all the Glory!

Visitors from far and near attended the 2006 American Gospel Quartet Convention in Birmingham Alabama. And thanks to Loretta Coleman and LC Ministries I was able to be in attendance as well. That’s right,  I received a call from Ms. Coleman telling me that I’d been selected  to attend the convention courtesy of LC ministries and my registration was taken care of and sure enough when I got there everything was waiting for me at the Convention registration table. CD’s, access to the lunches, seminars and all of the showcase concerts you’d ever want to see, along with live recordings, oh the list goes on and on and of course, my favorite, the Annual convention T-Shirt! Shout out to LC Ministries and Loretta Coleman…Thank You, Thank You, Thank you. I’ve been to the convention before, but this year’s is one I will never forget!

I was able to travel to the convention with the Clifton Brothers, nephews of the late Hardy Clifton/ Brooklyn Allstars and the lead singer of Serenity of Apex, NC. We rode about 8 hours to fellowship with Dr. Stewart and be a part of this year’s American Quartet convention. I pause here to say it was worth every minute and mile traveled. I can hardly wait until next year. I definitely intend to stay longer and participate in more of the seminars and roundtable discussions. Years earlier, I remember going to see the showcases and hear my favorite groups perform. Now that I’ve actually attended some of the seminars, luncheons and  special services I now know what I have been missing. And I choose not to miss out on the valuable information and experiences of those that have and still are paving the way for us to carry the torch and preserve our very own expressions and form of gospel music. Hats off to you Dr. Stewart and your hardworking staff for making this event possible!

The more I look at the major award shows that are televised nationally, the more visible  their attempts become, to take away long-established gospel and completely ignore this huge piece of our ethnicity. But who can we blame? We have to blame ourselves. We have people in place that have been gifted to carry on events such as the AGQC, the Fall Classic, The Quartet Division of the GMWA annual events on a national level and rather than UNITE and support the cause to expand our assembly and  ministry, we’d rather focus on mind-numbing trivial particulars like why do we have to pay, what time do we sing and the list goes on and on. All I can say is pray people, we’re tearing down the very opportunities that are meant to elevate us in the ministry. Meanwhile, commercial America (might as well call it what it is) unites and mentions our form of music in each of it’s Doves, Grammy awards and makes our music and contributions so insignificant they’re not even televised as a part of the show in many instances. C’mon people, we deserve more than that. And look at us on our Stella and BET Awards. We ought to know better, we’re even doing it to ourselves. Yes, granted Contemporary Gospel is making money, but don’t sell your own self out. You didn’t come from that. Search your origin before they take that away too. Let’s get this thing together and work the options that  we do have, and make such a loud unified statement that others will have to take notice our gifts will make room for us. It’s bad having to fit in where you’re not wanted. But when you invest in yourself, then you can perfect your marketing and promotion, the Holy Spirit will perfect your delivery, but remember to whom much is given, much is required and we are a blessed people especially in the arts. No one can deny our gifts. God has done his part. Now, what about our investment into that which God has already given to us. I’ve found that these conventions present us a place we can come together and listen to others that have had the same struggles, discuss solutions. We can obtain a wealth of knowledge that addresses us on our level. When have you ever known knowledge to come cheap? It cost someone.

Having said all of that, these were the "going ons" at this years AGQC. And again thanks to Loretta Coleman and LC Ministries as well as “We CARE” Promotions, I’m able to share this info with you. But again, someone paid.

At the AGQC……. We saluted The Caravans all week long.

Wednesday was Women’s Day. The showcases was sponsored by Malaco Records. and various female quartets sang during the nightly service.

Thursday, the luncheon was sponsored by EMI Gospel and Darrell McFadden & the Disciples. The Caravans were special guest at the roundtable discussion. Their wisdom experience and spirituality made the discussion an awesome experience, unlike any the convention has had prior to now. Road to Glory Showcased Lillie Hill Watts. Then HiLites Ministries taped “Leomia Boyd, Live,  ”. Doc McKenzie hosted. Following the recording we were treated to Illinois Night.  KD Bowe of “The Light”, syndicated radio  hosted this event. A Chicago Hometown Tribute was expressed by Deacon Reuben Burton And The Chicago Chapter Of The AGQC.

Friday was T Shirt Day and my first opportunity to attend Morning Worship during the week. It was a wonderful experience. The sanctuary was consecrated for the rest of the day’s service. There were testimonies, prayer, praise and worship. The Selvy’s were Friday’s Praise & Worship leaders. Following Morning Worship the panel of seminar instructors were introduced and each gave a 2 minute overview of the seminar they would instruct. These are some of the panel members and seminars that were offered.

Dr. Ross – Ear, Nose & Throat

Ed Sharp – Music Arrangement, Copyrights

Dr. Stewart – “Winds of Change”, moved by the spirit of God

KD Bowe – The Power of Syndicated Radio

Vanessa Vaughn – What’s New in Radio, Blance Goodson, Moderator

Bobby Hurd – Enhancing Concert promotions

Pastor Hinton – Men’s Division

Luther Barnes – Quality Productions

Doc McKenzie -  Choosing Studios, benchmark level  of quality

Attorney Hearns and Peggy – Contract Issues, Publisher rights, Piracy

and more…

Next, the luncheon …

The Caravans were Guest Of Honor at The Annual  Hall Of Fame & AGQC Luncheon Friday. Albertina Walker, Inez Andrews and Dolores Washington were in attendance. Tey all looked great ( see the pictures) A clip of the Caravans from the 60’s was shared with the honorees and lunch attendees. It was absolutely Awesome! Dr. Stewart’s intentions were to share 3 songs with us, but the luncheon attendees weren’t about to let that happen. We had to hear each Caravan lead a song, we had to stand up in admiration, then we had to clap our hands and render praise along with The Caravans. The Caravans in attendance spent most of the time whispering to each other and smiling. It was quite obvious they were enjoying themselves. Following the  mini concert on film, the key to the city of Birmingham was presented to Edgar Kendricks, also the recipient of the AGQC Cornerstone Award. The Selvy’s (I believe of Arkansas) sang a tribute to The CARAVANS, much to their delight. The Caravans were standing reeling and rocking with the Selvys.

Later Friday afternoon the AGQC presented a Tribute to Hurricane Katrina & Rita survivors, Salute to US Soldiers and their families.. After the color guard performed and a darling little songster belted out The Star Spangled Banner with ease and perfection, she appeared to be around 5 or 6 years of age. The Elgin Airforce Base Choir sang They boasted more than 336 years of service among the group. They’re were about 25 of them.

The AGQC Youth Celebration was Saturday, January 21st, AGQC Cornerstone Awards Release of “SUN IS SHINING ABOVE THE CLOUDS” - a compilation of new artist presented by the AGQC. It features Evang. Dorothy Norwood, Minister Teddy Cross, Bishop Darrell McFadden, Evangelist Evelyn Turrentine Agee, Minister Luther Barnes, Bro. Roscoe Robinson (Five Blind Boys of Alabama), Pastor Renita Allen Dixon, Rose Marie Cameron & Brother Doc McKenzie

AGQC HALL OF FAME Induction was held on Sat. at 6:30. Bill & Essie Moss (parents of J. Moss), received AGQC JOE LIGION LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.

Mother Ruby Summerville Dickson was inducted to Hall of Fame. Charles Steele, President SCLC-- Special Guest.

Sheridan Gospel Network “THE LIGHT” joined with the AGQC as a Media partner.

The theme of this year’s Convention was “Standing Firm in the Lord!

It was a great experience. Well planned and particularly beneficial to anyone desiring growth in the traditional gospel music industry. Make plans to attend next year and I’ll see you there.

Accolades to Promoter Eunice Wilkerson Evans for her wonderful Black History program Feb. 18 at Living Waters in Durham, NC. I might add I’ve not seen that many people in attendance at a program there in quite a few years.

Great Job, Eunice.

And the 100 Women in Red really added the right spice to the evening. The fellowship was awesome. That’s one thing I’ve noticed about Living Waters, the way the auditorium is setup is really people friendly. No staircases for the Seniors to get winded trying to climb and parents to have to lug their children. And I absolutely love the huge lounge area out near the concession stand. Great for increases sells at the concession. So now that you know how much I like Living Waters, on to the program.

It was especially nice to meet and greet with the pioneer singers from our area. And I’ll tell you, they weren’t shy one bit. They were more than eager to share their experiences singing up and down the road for 40 & 50 plus years, they shared opportunities they’d had to quit their jobs and sing fulltime and stories of how they chose to make a home for their families. They even shared advice on what it takes for the younger groups to reach 40 & 50 years in the song ministries. I tell you there was a lot of unselfish wisdom in the house and that’s what so many of us really need.

Groups being honored were:

The Cooper Four, Hillsborough
The Mighty Royalettes, Durham
The Famous Jordanaires, Durham

Groups on program were:

The Anointed Lights- Raleigh They are not from Wake Forest. (Youth Choir)

The Soul Believers- of Oxford (young teenage guys)

The Price Family-Durham ( a family group)

The Orange Street Senior Citizens Choir (Senior citizens community Choir)

Tony & The Magnificent Voices,Durham
2nd Chance, Hillsborough
Friends, Dillion, SC
Thelma Bass & The Faithfulaires, Durham
Rufus Poole & The Stars of Faith, Durham

There were quite a few particular touches that made this event a valuable and memorable occasion. Ironically enough, some of the groups being honored for many years of service were closely related to some of the upcoming groups that ministered on the program. Family ties are always warm and special in the ministry. There was a special time allotted for a spokesperson from each group to address the audience with experiences, advice, well wishes and gratitude. There was great singing which we all love. There were lots of Seniors in the audience that were very appreciative of the groups being honored and would witness to some of the rough times the groups had experienced many years ago. Then the Area Pioneers were recognized with certificates of Appreciation. There was a picture mural of the groups being honored, displayed publicly. They really got a kick out of that.

Each group’s name will be conserved as a quilt block on our Historical Signature Quilt, which was an extraordinary gift of gratitude, courtesy of Eunice Wilkerson Evans.

Then there were the 100 Women in Red, which came to show support to Eunice and might I say, we looked very pretty in our red. And we were all on one accord. Then as if that wasn’t enough, Your’s truly, moi! I was the proud recipient of First prize in the raffle . Yes, I won $75 cash! Whew!

What a magnificent evening!

Eunice, God bless you for working to make your vision a reality. Just know that your work was not in vain. Many were blessed by your visions and labors. Hold on and continue to let God direct your path. And thank you for working soo-oo hard to preserve the history and legacy of traditional gospel music in this 21st Century.

And many special thanks to the "We CARE" Saturday Morning Broadcast listeners that were present to support this worthwhile event. It was great seeing you there. Keep listening! Continue to support these events and help to preserve traditional gospel music!

Eunice presents... Eunice & Dr. Powell Dec. E. Haywood, We CARE Women of Honor Evg. Maggie Ingram Maggie & Ingramettes

Eunice Wilkerson Evans’ 9th Promoting Anniversary was an event to remember for years to come. Honestly, Eunice took her promoter’s Anniversary to another level. The service was spiritual, uplifting, informative. It wasn’t just a song service, but also a service used to pay tribute to honorable women. But I expected nothing less from Eunice.  She’s the founder of EWE Production and Performing Arts Outreach Ministry, where the slogan is “We use gospel music as a positive means to influence the youth in the community.” Among her list of annual events is an Annual Black History Month Concert (3rd weekend in Feb.), her Anniversary Celebration (3rd weekend in May), Annual  Summerfest Concert (3rd weekend in July). She also presents the Annual Anniversary Celebration of Tony & The Magnificent Voices. As you can see Eunice is definitely a promoter on the move. I think it’s safe to say at this point she will soon join in with “We CARE” to co partner in our broadcast as well as something special, so keep your ears and eyes open!

Now back to the Anniversary…

The event was held at the Antioch Baptist Church on Holloway Street in Durham. Buddy Baldwin of Chapel Hill was the illustrious MC for the evening. He was exciting, efficient and SHARPPPPPP, as always. The groups included quartets as well as choirs. The singin was very good the special guest of the evening was Evanglist Maggie Ingram & The Ingramettes out of Richmond Virginia, might I add she was also one of the women honored during the evening. It had been years since I heard Maggie and her voice is as strong as ever. They were very good. Sangin Neeta (that’s what I call her) was with Maggie as well as her band, but they did announce the other background singers left VA with them but did not arrive with them. So I assume that means they were lost somewhere in the journey from VA to NC. The band sang background and their song ministry went forth. The audience did not miss the group at all and Maggie and Neeta ministered with the power of God as their leader. I tell you the service was spirit filled!

Eight great women were honored and they were:

Rev. Edna Royster Wilkerson, Deacon Eunice Haywood, Mrs. Maggie Jackson, Pastor Margo Pettiford, Mrs. Joyce Jones, Pastor Marie Winston, Dr. Verly Powell and Evangelist Maggie Ingram (see pictures). All of them received a Certificate of Appreciation for their services and a well constructed booklet to commemorate the evening. Sister Eunice Wilkerson Evans wishes to thank everyone that supported this Anniversary. God made it great, but your support is appreciated too!
